I spent the afternoon photographing James in his natural habitat, namely his home piano studio. He gave me three ibuprofen and proceeded to blast away at some Boulez and Schoenberg while I worked around him trying to get a handle on my first experiment with off-camera flash. It was all fun though, and we came away with some great stuff and a killer idea for a Buzzfeed quiz.
Anyone who knows me probably knows I don't drink coffee. But that doesn't mean I don't like a cozy place to warm up and dive into a book for a while during the cold months. Just a few blocks from Shenandoah is just such a nice spot--small, local, full of character (and characters): Hopscotch Coffee Roasters. They seem to take their coffee pretty seriously too, offering subscriptions to their fresh crop offerings and roasting their beans in small batches on-site. You know, if you're into that kind of thing.
Es ist so still, so heimlich um mich. Die Sonn ist unten, der Tag entwich. Wie schnell nun heran der Abend graut. Mir ist es recht, sonst ist mir's zu laut.
-Leitner (1825)
It is so still, so secret around me.
The sun is set, the day expired.
How fast now the evening fades to gray!
To me it is perfect; the day is too loud.
A wonderful evening with James and Kate who hosted a dinner party yesterday evening. It was especially a treat to meet the wonderful Finnish pianist Paavili Jumppanen and pick his brain about the Schumann Humoreske!
